Located in the heart of the Xochimico’s canals, Doll’s Island has a history totally unique. Sometime in the 1950’s Julián Santana Barrera begun collecting dolls found in the trash. He lived in this tiny island in Xochimilco and according to his family, these dolls kept the bad spirits away. The family also says that a young girl drowned at the island and he brought the dolls to keep her spirit happy. The island was for many years forgotten, but then in the 1990’s a program to clean up the canals gave again way for the Mexican style gondolas (trajineras) to pass by the island. Julian drowned at the island on April 17th, 2001. His family keeps the place by visitor’s donations; the place has no electricity, no running water or any other kind of utilities. Cellular phones do get a signal, as Xochimilco is inside the limits of Mexico City’s Federal District.
To get there, you take a “trajinera” from the Cuemanco Pier and ask to be taken there. It’s a 2 hour trip each way, and during the trip you can enjoy beautiful views of Xochimico’s scenery.

Performed in the central and southern highlands of Peru, the Scissors Dance is a traditional event that tests the physical and spiritual strength of the participants. Westerners usually regard “La Danza de las Tijeras” as a physical test where two men have to prove their dexterity and resistance to pain, but to the people of the Andes, this dance is a sacred ritual. The dancers, called danzaq, perform difficult stunts and leaps, called atipanakuy, accompanied by the music of a violin, a harp and the sound of the scissors they each hold in their hands. The origin of the danzaq and their Scissors Dance is shrouded in mystery, but some anthropologists believe they appeared in 1524, during the rebellion against Spanish colonial rule. According to old Spanish chronicles, Huancas (pre-Hispanic deities) possessed the bodies of indigenous young men, allowing them to perform an impossible-looking dance signaling the return of the Old Gods to vanquish the Christian God of the Spanish. As we all know, that didn’t happen, but the tradition of the Scissors Dance was kept alive by the Andean people. It’s almost impossible to believe someone can accomplish this kind of acrobatic moves, while handling a pair of scissors made out of two individual sheets of metal, 25 cm each, but the danzaq do much more. To show spiritual superiority, they go through a series of challenges that include sticking sharp objects through their bodies, eating glass or walking on fire. The Scissors Dance is sometimes performed continuously for hours, until one of the competitors proves his superiority.

An American girl, who suffers from a rare and undiagnosed syndrome that prevents her from putting on weight, has to eat every 15 minutes in order to stay alive. Lizzie Velasquez, 21, from Texas, who is a communications student, weighs just 25.4 kg and has almost zero per cent body fat, but is not anorexic. This, despite 60 small meals a day, consisting of between 5,000 and 8,000 calories daily. Velasquez had been born four weeks prematurely and doctors found there was minimal amniotic fluid protecting her in the womb. Genetic experts could not diagnose her illness, and her case fascinated doctors all over the world. Now she is part of a study run by Professor Abhimanyu Garg in Dallas. Garg believes Velasquez may have Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome which causes accelerated ageing, fat loss from the face and body. People with PRS often have triangular and prematurely aged faces with pointy nose.

Lizzie said: “I weigh myself regularly and if I gain even one pound I get really excited. I eat every 15-20 minutes to keep my energy levels up. I eat small portions of crisps, sweets, chocolate, pizza, chicken, cake, doughnuts, ice cream, noodles and pop tarts all day long, so I get pretty upset when people accuse me of being anorexic. When I meet new people I have to say: ‘Hi, I’m Lizzie and I have this rare syndrome, I am NOT anorexic’.”

Lizzie has a brother Chris, 12, and a sister Marina, 15, who are both normal. She was born four weeks prematurely – weighing just 2lb 10oz.

Lizzie’s parents said: “They told us they had no idea how she could have survived. They told us she would never be able to walk, talk or have a normal life. We had to buy dolls’ clothes from the toy store because baby clothes were too big.”

Despite what her appearance might suggest, Lizzie’s brain, bones, internal organs… developed normally, but she nearly died twice: once when her appendix ruptured at 16 and another time at 19, because her blood cells were not multiplying properly (she was critically anemic).Lizzie was born with two brown eyes, but when she was four, her right eye began to change of color and she became blind from that eye.

This story is about a young man, Sain Mumtaz, from Pakistan which had shocked the whole world. Sain is a beggar and his life has never been easy. This 18 years old man has the most extraordinary head. To him, when he was a boy, was told that he has the Proteus Syndrome. Proteus syndrome, also known as Wiedemann’s syndrome (named after the German pediatrician Hans-Rudolf Wiedemann), is a congenital disorder that causes skin overgrowth and atypical bone development, often accompanied by tumors over half the body. Currently there is about 120 people who have some form of this syndrome. Proteus syndrome is a progressive condition wherein children are usually born without any obvious deformities. Tumors and skin and bone growths appear as they age. His appearance on the “My shocking story” on the Discovery Chanel really had influence and a doctor from Sydney, Australia Edwin Kirk offered his help with: x-rays; blood tests; and genetic tests,so he could get a proper, a diagnose for his condition. Living with a condition like this I am sure it is not easy, especially since his head keeps growing and it is every year harder for him to carry that weight. Can this man hope that this magic doctors from Australia will do the wonder? Sain has always believed that his condition is a curse from the God and that there is nothing to be done, but to carry his own weight and hope that he will not have to many days on earth. Can there be a spark of light in his world? This story makes us feel so small and helpless. Many of our problems that we complain about in life are extremely trivial in comparison to what this man has to go through just by being alive. Really makes you think. Definitely this would break most of the people that I know. I am not sure what is next to be heard. The world is going crazy. While there was a natural selection there was not so many conditions or diseases. I don’t want to sound harsh, but are we playing a little bit of God and causing all of this to ourselves?

Vladimir P. Demikhov, was a Russian surgeon whose pioneering work in performing organ transplants on dogs set the stage for similar operations on humans in later years. He never got recognitions as he should. He was one of the best surgeons and made a great contribution to the science specially in the field of surgery. Dr. Demikhov was the first to perform a heart transplant on a dog, in 1946. This was in the time of cold war, when America and Russia were showing of and trying to show their superiority n the field of science, medicine, as well as in other fields. This way of competition brought some good things as well as very bad ones. The bad thing is that both of the countries were most of all showing their superiority in the field of armament. In 1947, Dr. Demikhov carried out the first animal lung transplant, which was also performed on a dog; and in 1952 he conducted the first coronary bypass, on another dog. In 1954 Vladimir Demikhov shocked the world by unveiling a surgically created monstrosity: A two-headed dog. He created the creature in a lab on the outskirts of Moscow by grafting the head, shoulders, and front legs of a puppy onto the neck of a mature German shepherd.Demikhov paraded the dog before reporters from around the world. Journalists gasped as both heads simultaneously lapped at bowls of milk, and then cringed as the milk from the puppy’s head dribbled out the unconnected stump of its esophageal tube. The Soviet Union proudly boasted that the dog was proof of their nation’s medical preeminence. This is how this looked like, and this is not a sight for the fainthearted. The sight is not pretty but in the name of science lot of things have been done, and if you get to look the whole picture you’ll get to learn that some sacrifices had to be done. Now days many transplantation are done, and someone had to be the pioneer and brake the ice.
