China’s one-child policy often means that parents will abandon any child that is not wanted. This policy is put into effect in 1979 in order to curb population growth, and a strong cultural preference for male children, this gender gap could result in as many as 60 million “missing” girls from the population by the end of the decade. There is still a question what happened to those girls? In China there are more than 7 million of abortions, if from this number even only few percents end up in the orphanages, well I’ll leave you play with numbers and tell me how many children per year end up there. China has always limited foreign adoptions, and it does not publish reliable statistics on the number of children in its orphanages. American citizens adopted more than 6,000 children in 2006 and in last few years the number is rising, yet China has always limited foreign adoptions, and it does not publish reliable statistics on the number of children in its orphanages. Not sure what is the purpose of this but most of the children remain in the orphanages without any chance to prosper in life. China is a very big country, but still very poor. Go figure what are the chances for those children to make something in theirs lives.
