The father of evolution

Charles Darwin, started his studies of medicine in Edinburgh, but he quitted after two years and began with studies for a priest in Cambridge. His life changed from the roots when he started his journey on ship called ‘The Beagle” in 1831. The journey lasted for five years; he got to see South America, Africa and Australia. After he had returned from his journey he has published books in zoology and biology and became a leading scientist in that time. His best known book “The origin of spices” was published in 1859. Here are some interesting facts from Darwin’s life.

Charles father Robert, who was a doctor, didn’t have to high opinion of his son. Charles started the studies of medicine even though he wasn’t interested in it. He wanted to prove to his father that he is able to do it, even if his father was always saying to him: “You don’t care about nothing except shooting, running with dogs; hunting rats…you’re going to disgrace the family”.

Being curious by nature, Charles would from the time he saw some unknown animal wonder what taste it is. While he was studying on Cambridge, he became a member of one club called “Gourmands club”. Once a week they have their meetings where they were eating hawk meat, herons meat, owls meat and other. His wish to taste different kinds of meat was awaken on this journey. Those exotic countries he had opportunity to visit, offered to him tastes he had never seen or tasted before. He loved turtles meat so much that he took on his returning back 48 turtles.

On his 25th birthday February 12th, 1834, Captain Fitzroy decided to give as a present to Darwin a mountain, the highest peak on Tierra del Fuego. Today there are mountains on Antarctic called Mount Darwin, also in California, Tasmania, a village in Zimbabwe is being called like that, and Darwin is also the name of a volcano on Galapagos.

Darwin took on his journey book “The lost paradise” of a very popular writer of that time John Milton.

When the Captain Robert Fitzroy found out that he will go for a scientifically journey, he asked for a young and educated scientist who would accompany him on this trip. He knew that sea journey can be depressive and his precursor committed a suicide, so he to prevent that asked for company. Professors from the University recommended Charles Darwin. Charles father was against this, but he got persuaded by Charles uncle. Than there was another obstacle. Captain of the ship was convicted that he can tell people by their noses and he didn’t liked Darwin’s nose!
